Walking to work, I spotted the following phrase on a bumper sticker:

“God Invented Evolution”

I nearly stopped in my tracks, and seeing a woman sitting in the front seat of the car, I *almost* inquired as to what exactly she meant. I thought better of it though, seeing that her car carried several other pieces of Jesus-oriented flair…

Three days later, I have been turning that phrase around in my mind long enough to have sorted out what it is that stumped me at first:

  • Fitting in with the usual arguments regarding Evolution vs. Creationism, wouldn’t it have been more in line with church dogma to have said “God Created Evolution”? Perhaps that’s just a quibble of semantics…I’m just sayin’…

The real conundrum is:

  • By acknowledging the existence of evolution, even as something “invented” by God, the Theory of Evolution suddenly becomes validated by the very voices seeking to discredit it!

Evolution works in such beautiful, mysterious, articulate ways, it really doesn’t matter to me whether or not Mother Nature gets credit – I’m pretty sure she could care less too – just so long as our feeble minds can be at peace with this magnificent aspect of life on our planet, maybe even taking it into consideration while we rape and pillage the habitats of other species.

Has anyone else encountered this weird intersection of logic, where Creationists, perhaps recognizing the mountain of evidence backing up Evolutionary theory, have tried to create middle ground where they can be right regardless? Does this bother anyone, or are you just as amused as I?
